Ortho-K:
daytime vision without glasses
Sleep in the lenses. Wake up and take them out.
Ortho-K uses special lenses customised for each eye.
During sleep, they temporarily act on the surface of the cornea.
In the morning, the lenses are removed.
It is a particularly interesting solution for:
- People who play sports
- Young adults who prefer not to wear glasses during the day
- Selected children and teenagers in the context of myopia control
Experience since 1995.
Optometrist Paulo Martins has worked with Ortho-K since 1995 and was one of the pioneers of this technique in Portugal.
How does it start?
First, we carry out a complete assessment.
We analyse:
- Prescription
- Corneal shape
- Corneal topography
- Eye health
- Tear film
- Other parameters needed to determine whether you are a candidate
A personalised fitting is then created.

How does Ortho-K work for adults?
Ortho-K uses overnight lenses that gently and temporarily reshape the cornea during sleep, helping you achieve clearer vision throughout the day.
When do I put on and remove the lenses?
Put the lenses on before going to sleep and remove them in the morning, after the recommended wear time from your fitting plan, following the hygiene and care instructions.
Can I go through the day without glasses or contact lenses?
For many patients, after the fitting period, you can have good daytime vision with less dependence on glasses and without wearing contact lenses during the daytime.
Are the lenses the same for everyone?
No. Ortho-K lenses are custom-made for each eye based on corneal topography and your fitting with OPTICLINIC.
Is Ortho-K surgery?
No. It is a non-surgical option: you use special overnight lenses with regular clinical follow-up.
What are the main benefits for adults?
Clearer daytime vision with more freedom from frames, especially useful for people who practise sports or want to reduce dependence on glasses.

What is Ortho-K used for in children?
In selected children and teens, Ortho-K can be part of a strategy to help control the progression of myopia.
How does overnight wear work?
The lenses are worn during sleep and removed in the morning. This way, the child can have daytime vision without relying on glasses in everyday situations.
Does Ortho-K help slow myopia progression?
It can help when there is clinical indication. Results are monitored over time so we can evaluate outcomes and keep the follow-up plan.
Can a child go to school and play sports without glasses?
In many cases, the strategy leads to less time using glasses during the day, including school and sports activities. Outcomes vary and depend on the fitting.
Can any child use Ortho-K?
No. A clinical assessment is required to confirm candidacy and that good hygiene and correct use are possible.
Does Ortho-K cure myopia?
No. Ortho-K is not a cure: the effect is temporary and requires regular follow-up.
Technology for a precise fitting
Corneal topography allows us to create a detailed map of each cornea's surface and monitor the fitting over time.
Every cornea has a different shape.
That is why each Ortho-K lens is fitted in a personalised way.
Optometrist Paulo Martins works with:
- Ortho-K since 1995
- Corneal topography
- High-Dk lenses
- High oxygen transmissibility
- Specific designs with tear reservoirs
- Advanced topography technology
- Personalised follow-up
Important
Ortho-K is not a cure for myopia.
It requires assessment, personalised fitting, rigorous hygiene and regular follow-up.
Not everyone is a candidate for Ortho-K.
That is precisely why the first assessment is so important.
